SurfKitchen brings easy access to Mobile TV for North American mobile network operator
Company Debuts On-Device Portal Software at CTIA; Solution is Proven to Boost 3G Data Services ARPU
ORLANDO, FL (CTIA) – March 23, 2007– SurfKitchen, the market leader in ondevice portal (ODP) software, today announced its SurfKit Stream client software that simplifies mobile phone access to streaming TV is now available to North American mobile network operators. SurfKit Stream is the latest component of SurfKitchen’s suite of on-device portal (ODP) software that provides a graphical, ondevice alternative to WAP portals for mobile content services.
SurfKit Stream is a fully interactive streaming TV client with intuitive graphical menus for channel switching and quick access to on-screen program guides for a superior mobile TV experience. Subscribers can easily discover, view and purchase TV content, while carriers have the ability to send content previews and promotions to the handset over the air.
“Mobile TV capabilities are evolving rapidly and provide a great ARPU opportunity for carriers. However, to avoid the fate of other 3G data services, which have failed to live up to their sales potential, mobile TV programming must be easy to find and easy to watch and that’s the advantage which SurfKit Stream brings to carriers,” said Michel Quazza, CEO of SurfKitchen. “The success of our ODP solution shows that dramatically simplifying the user experience readily translates into increased data uptake by users and so improves data revenues, and that has resonated with the North American carriers we are talking to.”
SurfKit Stream is available for Java, Symbian and Microsoft Windows Mobile platforms, offering carriers the ability to deploy a consistent customer experience across a wide range of devices. The software has been successfully integrated into devices from Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Imate and Palm. SurfKit Stream also features a soft key that changes the view from portrait to landscape mode – allowing the viewer to view full screen. A carrier can integrate it with any streaming media service it has deployed and it can support subscription, one-off charging and bundling payment models. The software also supports streaming audio, with planned future support for DVB-H and MediaFLO broadcast networks.
SurfKit Stream can be used as a standalone service or can be combined with any product in the SurfKitchen mobile product suite to integrate content download and news/information portal capabilities into a service bundle, targeting users who want to download content and view information about their favorite shows.
With SurfKitchen on-device portal software users can preview ringtones, games, wallpapers and other content – even while offline – before they purchase and download them. The information portal capability enables carriers to extend their online WAP portals to mobile customers with a clear and intuitive interface that makes it easy to navigate and view the content.
The simplicity of SurfKitchen’s ODP user interface makes discovery, consumption and repeat-usage of these services easy, and has proven to increase data services ARPU and reduce customer churn. SurfKitchen’s ODP software has been deployed by MNOs in Europe and Asia, where it has resulted in improved user satisfaction and up to a five-times increase in ARPU from downloads and data services.
