SurfKitchen will announce plans to deliver an app store experience across mid-range devices for mobile operators, at the mobile industry’s showcase event, Mobile World Congress, in Barcelona. The service, called SurfKit, has been on Orange UK since December, and is now being rolled out to Orange France, has already produced a 277% uplift in app sales, SurfKitchen claims.

The on-device portal was once seen as the key to unlocking the vast potential of mobile entertainment revenues. This was because of the direct link it provided between consumer and content. But as operators shifted away from one-off downloads to bundled services, the on-device portal had to evolve too. Surfkitchen refers to this new breed as ODP 2.0.

The CTIA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment 2008 trade show was held last week in San Francisco from September 10-12. The CTIA show’s focus was on wireless data. Here, J. Gerry Purdy, the Knowledge Center’s mobile and wireless analyst, shares his major insights from the show.
